Belen to Welcome Torch Run for Special Olympics on May 28

The City of Belen is proud to support the 2025 New Mexico Law Enforcement Torch Run (NMLETR) for Special Olympics. As part of a statewide 1,600-mile relay, local law enforcement and public safety personnel will carry the “Flame of Hope” through Belen on Wednesday, May 28 at 8:00 AM, beginning at Kicks 66.

The relay began on May 19 and will conclude in Albuquerque on May 30, where the final leg will kick off the 2025 Special Olympics New Mexico State Summer Games at the UNM Track & Field and Soccer Complex.

Each year, hundreds of officers from across the state run and bike through New Mexico’s cities, towns, and highways to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics New Mexico. Participants in the Torch Run are honored as “Guardians of the Flame of Hope,” supporting athletes with intellectual disabilities and promoting inclusion and empowerment through sport.

“Law enforcement agencies across our state gather proudly to carry the Flame of Hope torch, rekindling our commitment to raising awareness about the needs and incredible abilities of our Special Olympics athletes,” said LETR State Director Sgt. Travis Spruell of the Farmington Police Department.

The Belen community is invited to come out and cheer on our local heroes as they pass through the city in this powerful show of support and solidarity.
