OverviewThe Belen Fire Department is a combined career/volunteer department, comprised of 30 personnel trained as certified firefighters and emergency medical technicians. Our department serves a jurisdiction of approximately 5 square miles and a population of 8,000 citizens. The Belen Fire Department maintains 1 full-time station and 1 sub-station. Our department is committed to serving the citizens of Belen by providing fire protection and emergency medical services 24-hours per day. Our department has 3 pumper trucks, 1 ladder truck, 1 brush truck and 2 medical rescue units. |

Our department is divided into 4 divisions: Fire Suppression, Emergency Medical Services, Fire Prevention and Code Enforcement, and Emergency Management. The Fire Suppression Division oversees the training and procedures for live firefighting. The EMS division oversees that all licensed medical personnel are provided with continuing education hours, quality assurance, and that all EMT personnel follow standard operating guidelines and protocols. The Fire Prevention and Code Enforcement Division are responsible for the development, administration, and enforcement of all fire hazard and life safety codes for all commercial buildings and facilities. They also review new construction plans, inspect public occupancies and businesses for fire hazards, and provides fire safety education to the public. The Office of Emergency Management is a city/county program that allows for public awareness of public awareness to natural and technological emergencies. The OEM also manages all homeland security grants to the city and Valencia County to ensure that emergency response personnel are supplied with domestic preparedness equipment. |

Becoming a Volunteer FirefighterThe intent of the Belen Fire Department is to maintain a roster of interested individuals that have obtained certification in firefighting or emergency medical service to service the citizens of Belen. Our department is currently recruiting volunteer firefighters. These personnel are provided a stipend of $9.50 per emergency response, meeting and training attendance, special event, or other event as approved by the Fire Chief. |

The members of the department are encouraged to obtain licensure in the field of emergency medical services. At the bare minimum, each member must at least the training requirements listed above or must be obtained within the first 2 years of service. |

The City of Belen Office of Emergency
Management is to protect lives and property through planning
and mitigating actions prior to occurrence of a disaster and
by use of city resources during and after a disaster for
response and recovery.

All citizens residing within the municipal limits of Belen must obtain an open burning permit from the Fire Department. No trash of any kind (cans, cartons, rubber, plastics) or any other material that would create offensive, obnoxious or dangerous fumes or odors shall be burned. Burning hours are from 10am to 4pm daily. Burn permits are free and are valid for a period of 5 calendar days.

To be eligible for the Belen Fire Department, applicants must be at least 18 years of age; have a high school diploma or equivalent; posses a valid New Mexico drivers license; and New Mexico Emergency Medical Technician licensure at the Basic level as a minimum requirement.
