"I applaud the City of Belen for their efforts to 'Lead by Example,'" Governor Richardson said. "As Governor, I've made becoming a leader in energy innovation a priority for New Mexico and this project is a great example of what is possible when we work together." Governor Bill Richardson made these comments last September 11th in the parking lot at Belen City Hall.
In the fall of 2009 a ribbon cutting ceremony for the first ever carbon neutral commercial application of Infinia Corporation's PowerDish™ technology took place in the parking lot at Belen City Hall. Three solar dishes, each generating as much as 3kW of power, was inaugurated in front of a crowd of second graders from a local elementary school and state and local dignitaries'.
The installation was funded in part through a "Clean Energy" grant as part of Governor Richardson's Clean Energy Innovation Fund from the State Energy Minerals and Natural Resources Department. Then Mayor Ronnie Torres said, "Governor Richardson's mandate for New Mexico to become carbon neutral has inspired us. The city has shared, since then, the passion to lead by example through pursuing funding for renewable energy and initiating green sustainable practices in all that we do."
