For more than 50 years, the Belen Art League, a non-profit
organization, has been a staple in the community and has continued,
without hesitation, to promote and support the Arts in the Hub City.
After holding meetings in private homes and in a room in the public
library for the better part of half a century, the city donated a
building on Becker Avenue for a gallery, studio and gift shop.
All upkeep and maintenance of this building is the responsibility of
the Art League. Our annual dues and fund raisers such as Yard
Sales, Dessert in the Garden and other events help fund this upkeep.
One of our goals is to educate and support future artists in the
community. We do this by offering a range of classes, such as Oil,
Water Color, Oil Drip, Clay, Gourds, and Wood Burning, to
adults and children. In addition, a scholarship is given to a
deserving Belen High School student who will be majoring in a visual
art discipline. Profits from our annual Valentine tea support this
effort.
The Belen Art League has worked tirelessly to support local artists and have provided venues to showcase everything from pottery to paintings, fiber arts to jewelry, and wood art to metal art. You name it we have it. We have an annual Spring and Fall Art show where art work is displayed and judged. These venues are held at the Historic Harvey House Museum. Artist's works are displayed year round at the Belen Art League Gallery and Gifts, located at 509 Becker Ave. The majority of items displayed are for sale. The display is changed often, so you never know what you will find.
We are a member of the newly formed Rio Abajo Cultural Alliance (RACA) and our
working with other galleries in the area to promote cultural tourism
in the Rio Abajo.
